Abstract: »As Karen Pierce shows in the next chapter, ‘Sex, violence and graphics: Illustrating Helen’, Helen is the most victimized of mythological women from one perspective, yet the most sexually empowered from another. And, just as Helen’s depiction keeps shift ing in antiquity, as Pierce shows, American comic books have repeatedly reframed how Helen is depicted, including with depictions of rape coming to be recast as romance or seduction. As Pierce argues, however, such a recasting might be only on the surface, as required in the wake of the comic code criteria introduced in the 1950s.
